Since its inception in 1952, South China University of Technology (SCUT) has committed itself to building a world-class university. After over 60 years of development, SCUT steered onto a fast track of new enhancement, leading to improving in its ability to run schools, an increase in comprehensive strength, and expanding international influence. This has been testified by its constant progress in the four major world university rankings. In 2012, SCUT ranked among the Top 500 in Academic Ranking of World Universities. Afterwards, it moved up by 100 places every two years until 2017 when it ranked 235th globally and 11th in mainland China. In September 2017, SCUT embarked on its new journey in constructing a world-class university in the form of a Class A university of the Double First Class University Plan.
To give full play to SCUT’s advantages in cultivating talents and commercializing outputs of scientific research, a four-party agreement of constructing the Guangzhou International Campus of SCUT (GZIC) was signed in Beijing by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong provincial government, Guangzhou municipal government, and SCUT on March 15, 2017. The agreement focuses on major strategic requirements of high-quality and innovation-driven development. It also serves to lead the economic and social advancement of Guangdong and nearby regions.
An Intelligent Valley
GZIC is situated in the southern core area of Guangzhou International Science and Technology Innovation Town, Panyu district, a super gateway to the Belt and Road, an important transport hub of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Greater Bay Area and the GZ-SZ-HK Science and Technology Innovation Corridor. Together with Guangzhou University Town, and Cisco (Guangzhou) Smart City, GZIC weaves an integrated traffic network featured by four horizontal and seven longitudinal lines. Apart from the above geographical advantages, Guangzhou International Campus, closely linked with the other two campuses of SCUT, is committed to becoming an intelligent valley and the biggest brain power of the city, which will facilitate Gangdong to realize its goal of “taking the lead in the nation in four aspects”.
GZIC covers an area of 110 hectares, of which 1.4 million square meters is construction area. The first intake of post graduate students started in September 2018. While the first group of undergraduate students will be enrolled in September 2019, so as to establish a multi-layer educational system of 3,000 undergraduate students, 9,000 graduate students, and 2,500 international students by September 2023.
A Top International Talents Pool
GZIC plans to integrate the introduction and cultivation of elite scholars by providing top-notch platforms for Nobel laureates, academicians of developed countries, senior professors from world-class universities, experts under the Thousand Young Talents Program and the Young Talent Support Plan, winners of the National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars, and Young Changjiang Distinguished Professors.
To build an international and high-level faculty, GZIC has recruited 100 top talents in various fields, including 5 members of CAS and CAE, 7 members of world recognized academic associations from developed countries in Europe and Americas and more than 20 other top-notch talents such as Chief Scientists for “Project 973” and IEEE Fellows. The number of teaching staff, administrators and nonacademic personnel is estimated to be 1,600.
In active response to the construction of the Pearl River Delta Self-Dependent Innovation Demonstration Zone, SCUT will learn from the successful practices of world-class engineering universities through integrating into the regional system of innovation. To combine the efforts of universities, research institutes, and enterprises, GZIC will collaborate with innovative high-tech enterprises in building the Guangzhou Science and Technology Innovation Center and the National Innovation Center for Technological Industry. In structuring an eco-system for technological innovation and entrepreneurs, GZIC will strive to be an Intelligent Valley for Guangzhou, Guangdong and China.
Focus on Emerging Interdisciplinary Fields
Discipline design of the Guangzhou International Campus will be oriented towards the cutting edge of science and technology, and focus on the crossroads of frontier disciplines that will lead and support the future innovative development of China, especially the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In order to lead industrial transformation internationally over the next 20 to 30 years and take Guangdong to the forefront of a new round of reform, SCUT will strengthen basic research, applied research and original innovation, usher in groundbreaking technologies and place emphasis on emerging interdisciplinary fields. Accordingly, 10 schools and several research institutes will be set up, including the established International School of Advanced Materials, School of Biomedical Science and Engineering, Shien-Ming WU School of Intelligent Engineering, South China Advanced Institute for Soft Matter Science and Technology, SCUT-HKUST Joint Research Institute, Guangzhou Institute of Intelligent Engineering, Guangzhou Industrial Innovation Center for Materials Genome Engineering, and the Joint Institute for Biomedicine and Regenerative Medicine.
Collaboration with World Leading Universities
GZIC will work closely with the global world-class universities and prestigious research institutes to develop a full bridge of mutual cooperation in pooling resources to design innovation talents training programs, advance knowledge, breed world's cutting-edge technologies, and develop breakthroughs to address the many global challenges of today. Currently, SCUT has reached agreements or has intentions of cooperation with more than 200 world renowned universities, such as Oxford University, University of Michigan, McMaster University, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, University of Western Australia and other world-class universities, etc.
