Located in the south of Jiangsu Province and the middle of the Yangtze River Delta, Suzhou City sits with the neighbors of Shanghai Metropolitan and Zhejiang Province. Well known for its long history and rich culture, Suzhou was listed as one of the top cities livable in China in 2012.

The University of Science and Technology of Suzhou (USTS) is a comprehensive center of higher education situated in the center of the National High Tech Development Zone just to the west of Suzhou’s Old Town. The USTS was established by Chinese central and Jiangsu local government after combining Suzhou Institute of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection (SIUCEP) and Suzhou Railway Teachers College (SRTC) in September 2001, and both of which were formed in early 1980’s. It is now administrated primarily by Jiangsu government.

USTS provides well-established 58 programs at the baccalaureate in science, engineering, literature, history, philosophy, law, management, education, arts and economics etc. 15 and 55 of them are first- and second-level master programs. Three disciplines are selected as key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, including the Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering (subject group), Urban & Rural Planning and Management, and Environment Functional Materials and Technology; It also has 4 key provincial disciplines in Civil Engineering, Urban and Rural Planning, World History, and Landscape Architecture. Additionally, USTS is home to 3 national level specialty disciplines, 6 provincial level specialties and 8 provincial key specialties. The university now has 5 provincial-level key laboratories, 2 provincial-level humanities and social sciences research bases and 9 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. It also has other excellent public service facilities and resources such as a provincial-level engineering center, a provincial-level technical service platform, a provincial-level colleges and universities social science study base, a university science park, and an enterprise academician workstation.

I. Talent Requirements
Positions are available for the following university’s leading disciplines in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science and Engineering, Municipal Engineering, Civil Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Public Management, History and other related disciplines and specialties (“talent” is official Chinese parlance for individuals with proven exceptionality in their respective fields). Requirements for these positions are as follows:  

1. Minimum of two consecutive years of working experience as an associate professor or equivalent in well-known overseas universities or research institutions following receiving his/her Ph.D. abroad (or four plus years of working experience overseas following receiving his/her Ph.D. in China).   

2. Age of under 50 is preferable, but flexible for candidates with outstanding oversea experience.   

3. Capable of grasping the trends and directions of development in the his/her field of the discipline, developing a fundamental, strategic and prospective research program, securing funding for undertaking significant science and technology research projects from the national government in accordance with the strategic needs of the country and the international scientific and technological fronts. 

4. Having a well-established research record in the field of the discipline, which is internationally-recognized, such as published articles in influential academic journals, mastered key technologies and important patents, etc.  
5. Capable of leading a research team to carry out scientific researches comparable international levels of excellence and achieving scientific research progress drawing attention from peers domestic and abroad.    

6.Actively cultivating young faculty, promoting international academic exchange, and conducting productive collaborative researches with related organizations in China and abroad.   

7. Scrupulously abiding by academic morality, professional ethic moral integrity and rigorous scholarship. 

II. Level of Talents 
1. Level A: Candidates to be nominated as a member of the Chinese Academic of Sciences. 

2. Level B: Distinguished professors selected by “1000 Talent Plan” and “Changjiang Scholars Program”, or the national Outstanding Youth Science Foundation. 

III. Salaries and Benefits 
1. The salary for Level A talents will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis. An annual salary of ¥1,000,000 Yuan (RMB) is offered for Level B Talents. 

2. An apartment of 135-240 ㎡ will be provided, the property right of which can be transferred to the talent after the completion of the employment term. An appropriate sum to move will also be provided. 

3. A start fund of ¥500,000 Yuan (RMB) to 1,000,000 Yuan (RMB) will be provided for scientific research. 

4. Can form a research team with assigned personnel or with autonomously recruited personnel.  

5. Office and research space will be provided.  

6. Residential matters, visa affairs, settling and children’s school admission can be settled properly, job position for spouse can also be arranged, as well as benefits including insurance and medical care will be offered in accordance with relevant regulations of the official policies.

An Introduction to the Material Science and Engineering Discipline
The first-level discipline of Material Science and Engineering in Suzhou University of Science and Technology with postgraduate program is subordinate to a preponderant discipline in Jiangsu Province --- Environmental Function Material and Technology, and also depends on the Key Laboratory of Environmental Function Material and Technology of Jiangsu Province.  The discipline has several high-level laboratories as the Collaborative Innovation Center for Water Treatment Technology and Material, the New Material Training Center of Jiangsu Province. It also has an Excellent Science and Technology Innovation Team of Jiangsu Province universities as well as the excellent postgraduate courses in Jiangsu Province.

The fields of study and research interests of the discipline are as follows: 1) The matching effective control of micro-/nano porous inorganic materials; preparation graphene, semiconductor photocatalytic and their application for treatment of environment pollution; electrochemical sensor materials; environment repair materials and nano-materials; 2) upvonversion functional materials and device; electrochromic materials and devices; photonic crystals and structure color materials; electroluminescent materials; 3) recycle and reutilization of solid wastes.

There are 25 teachers on the faculty, including 10 professors and 4 associate professors. In the past years, more than 60 scientific projects sponsored by the country and the province have been completed (20 national natural science funds and 40 provincial/departmental funds), 200 SCI/EI academic papers have been published, 30 national invention patents have been accomplished and 10 science and technology awards at both provincial and departmental level have been achieved and a textbook has been published.

With the aim to cultivate professionals in environmental materials and engineering for the development of regional economy and to meet the need of the market economy of the south part of Jiangsu Province, this 3-year postgraduate program is mainly designed for the environmental function materials and technology, including techniques for material preparation, characterization of structure and performance, structure-activity relationship and application research, attaching great importance to the cultivation of scientific and technological innovative ability, adaptive capacity for different works and entrepreneurial ability of the postgraduates. 

An Introduction to the Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) Discipline
The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE) has been awarded as the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions, as well as the key discipline of Jiangsu Province. Moreover, the specialty of Environmental Engineering is the national characteristic specialized construction and the second batch of professional pilot of excellent engineer education and training program supported by the Ministry of Education. In 2010, ESE discipline was authorized with master's degree as a first level discipline, which is equipped with 2 provincial scientific research platforms: Jiangsu Key Lab of Environmental Science & Engineering and Jiangsu Key Lab of Environmental Engineering Technology, including numbers of advanced large-scale experimental equipment such as, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, scanning electron microscopy, continuous flow chemistry analyzer, continuum source atomic absorption spectrometer, automatic bacteria identification system, micro-experiment system, fluorescence quantitative PCR instrument, etc.

There are 38 full-time teachers on the faculty of the discipline of ESE, including 12 professors and 14 associate professors; representing 68.4% of the whole faculty with 55.3% of which having been awarded with doctor's degree. The ESE discipline is composed mainly of such stable research directions as the anaerobic biological wastewater treatment technology, the remediation technology and application of surface water, membrane materials and membrane technology in water treatment, soil remediation technologies, environmental planning and environmental risk assessment, treatment and disposal of solid wastes, etc.

An Introduction to the Public Administration Discipline
The undergraduate specialty of Labor and Social Security in School of Education and Public Administration was established in 2005. Now there are eleven professional teachers on the faculty of this major, including three professors, two associate professors (one supervisor for PHD, two for Master), among whom there are three doctors and eight masters.

This discipline focuses on the following researches: Chinese urban-rural integration and public policy, urban-rural planning and public administration, environmental administration, community management, social security and human resource management. The discipline of Public Administration mainly depends at present on the specialties of Labor and Social Security, HRM and the Research Institute of Urban-rural Integration, and benefits from such traditional preponderant disciplines of the university as Urban-rural Planning, Environment Science and Engineering, etc. 

The project of Urban Planning and Administration applied corporately by the two disciplines of Public Administration and Urban Planning won the first stage projects for the advantageous disciplines of Jiangsu province’s universities in 2011. In recent years, four national, eight provincial and over twenty other research projects have been obtained. Meanwhile, almost ten excellent achievement prizes have been won in Suzhou, and over thirty valuable advices have been adopted by the local government. 

In the five years to come, the characteristics of the discipline will be further reinforced and highlighted. First, new specialties of undergraduates are planned to be established, namely, Urban Management and Land Resource Management. Second, MPA is to be declared for constructing, and all the specialties already existing should also be reinforced.

An Introduction to the Discipline of History
The Discipline of History of Suzhou University of Science and Technology  was prepared to establish in 1981 and enrolled the first group of the undergraduate students in 1982. After generations of scholars’ continuous efforts and active explorations, our discipline has made prominent achievements in teaching team building, scientific research, platform establishment, and talent cultivation, and hence has been playing an important role with considerable influence among the same level universities inside and outside Jiangsu Province.

Our discipline boasts 20 full-time teachers, among which 9 are professors, 6 are associate professors; 13 are doctoral degree holders, 3 were postdoctoral fellows; 2 are doctoral supervisors, 14 are master’s supervisors; 3 are part-time professors at famous domestic universities; 1 is the honorary title holder of the “National Excellent Teacher”; 1 is the specialist who enjoy the special government allowance provided by the State Council; and some are the holders of important academic positions such as the president of the Chinese Research Association of History of Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the vice president of the Jiangsu Historical Society, etc..

During the past decade, our discipline had 4 research projects supported by the National Social Science Foundation, 9 supported by the Foundation of Humanities and Social Science of Ministry of Education; more than 400 academic articles and 30-odd monographs published; 1 research achievement awarded first grade prize of Jiangsu Excellent Achievements of Philosophical and Social Science, 2 others third grade prizes.

Our discipline boasts two master’s degree authorized units, one of which is World History, the other is Special History. The sub-discipline of World History is the key discipline of Jiangsu Province, while its informationization construction is supported by the central government financial project for supporting the development of provincial universities and colleges. History (teacher training) specialty is the key specialty of Jiangsu Province, and the Research Centre for the Modernization and International Issues of Asia-Pacific Countries is one of the university international issue research centers of Jiangsu.

The talents cultivated by our discipline are all over the country. They have been showing themselves in various fields, and thus embodying our objective of training talents who are to be experts in one thing and good at many.

An Introduction to the Municipal Engineering (ME) Discipline
The discipline of Municipal Engineering (ME) was authorized with master's degree as a second level discipline. In 2014, the specialty of Water Supply and Drainage Science and Engineering successfully passed the re-evaluation by the Evaluation Committee of the Ministry of Construction. The ME discipline is equipped with 2 provincial scientific research platforms: Jiangsu Key Lab of Environmental Science & Engineering and Jiangsu Key Lab of Environmental Engineering Technology, possessing  numbers of advanced large-scale experimental equipment such as GC-MS, HPLC-MS, scanning electron microscopy, continuous flow chemistry analyzer, continuum source atomic absorption spectrometer, automatic bacteria identification system, micro-experiment system, fluorescence quantitative PCR instrument, etc.

There are 17 full-time teachers on the faculty of ME discipline, including 4 professors and 7 associate professors, representing 64.7% of the whole faculty with 70.6% of which has been awarded with doctor's degree. The ME discipline is composed mainly of such stable research directions as city sewage treatment theory and technology, water supply treatment theory and technology, water resources protection and utilization.

An Introduction to the Civil Engineering Discipline
The discipline of Civil Engineering is one of the preponderant disciplines and one of the key disciplines of Jiangsu Province. This discipline has the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Structure Engineering as its scientific research base. It also has two excellent groups. One is the Jiangsu Provincial Outstanding Scientific and Technological Innovation Group. Another is the Jiangsu Provincial Preeminent Teaching Group. It was granted the charter to confer Academic Master Degrees in the first level discipline of Civil Engineering (including 4 second level disciplines) and Specialized Master Degrees in the field of architecture and civil engineering. 

The 4 second-level disciplines are:
(1)Structural Engineering, which started its teaching of graduate students from the year of 2004 with its major research area covering the theory and its application of steel structures, concrete structures and composite structures, and seismic research of multi-story buildings.
(2)Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, which started from 2006 with its major research area covering numerical simulation of near fault quake wave motions, fire resistance of engineering structures, and wind and seismic resistance of high-rise buildings.
(3)Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, which started from 2011 with its major research area covering health monitoring, seismic behavior, design theory and its application of bridges.
(4)Geotechnical Engineer, which started from 2012 with its major research area covering soft soil foundation treatment, and theory and its application of soil-pile coupling vibration.
