First of all, there are two ways of finding yourself a room for rent: Rental Agent and the Skykiwi BBS. I would highly recommend Chinese students to use the Skykiwi BBS finding their target rooms. Skykiwi is the largest Chinese BBS in New Zealand, nearly all Chinese in New Zealand use it for finding and posting information. It contains nearly everything that you will need while staying in this country.

In the Skykiwi BBS, you can find a specialized house rental sector with almost all the available rooms and houses for Chinese. It operates similar to the Baidu Tieba in China, most of the landlord will provide photos of their rooms and houses for reference in their post, you can click in the posts youre interested in and simply contact the target landlord for further room checking appointment.
在Skykiwi论坛，你可以找到一个专门的房屋租赁部门，几乎所有的房间和房子都为中国人提供。它的操作类似于中国的百度贴吧，大多数房东会在帖子中提供自己的房间和房子的照片供参考，你可以点击你感兴趣的帖子，然后直接联系目标房东进行进一步的查房预约。
Please note, while checking the rooms you are interested in, please do check around the house, especially the bathrooms and the kitchen, as some of the houses in New Zealand are really old, might have some aging issues. Moreover, please do tell your future landlord about your living habits and ask about other tenants living habits as well, to find out if you are suitable for living in this house.

Rooms for rent usually come with full furniture and network connection, the rent normally included utility bills. If you have some friends and all get along with each other well, to rent a house might be a better choice for you guys. The way of finding a suitable house is as same as finding a room for living. But its worth noting that most houses for entire tenancy will not provide any furniture and network connection, I would only recommend it for those have friends to share the house and wish to live in for a long time. At last, please pay attention to the tenancy agreement and the deposit receipt. Some of the landlords are not willing to sign any tenancy agreement with you, its ok but at least save the chatting records with the landlord about the rent withdrawal agreement and do ask the landlord to sign a deposit receipt.
