The lecture apparently disproves what is argued in the reading material. According to the passage, three factors are responsible for the decline of the yellow cedar: insect parasites, brown bears and climate changes. However the professor asserts that a closer scrutiny of this argument would reveal how flimsy it is. He then presents several evidences to demonstrate his statement that none of these evidence is adequate.

Imprimis, the passage may be right about detrimental effect of the bark beetles, but one critical fact is being left out of consideration. Pointed out by the professor, the author totally neglects the truth that healthy yellow cedars are generally more resistant to insect infestation than other tree species because of their powerful chemicals that are poisonous to insects. That is to say, bark beetles only attack trees that were already damaged or sick, and would have probably died anyway because these trees cannot release poisonous chemicals any more. Therefore, bark beetles are not the fundamental cause responsible for the decline of the yellow cedar. On account of above-mentioned grave mistakes, the passage author’s assertion turned out to be a preposterous idea.

Furthermore, the passage assumes that brown bears’ clawing at the cedars may weaken the trees. The professor, however, suggests that this assumption may not be merited by the evidence. Say, bears mainly live on the mainland and there were no bears on the islands. The contradiction is obvious here when yellow cedars’ decline actually happens both on the mainland and on island. Therefore, the decline occurs with and without bears. On the basis of this point the lecture explicitly refutes the passage.

Even so, supposition given by the author states that climate change may affect the root system so that trees will be more incline to suffer damage from freezing. But the professor claims that the reading passage fails to take into account that if freezing damage were responsible for the decline, then we should find more trees dying in the cold weather with higher elevations. However, more trees were dying in the relative warmth with lower elevations. Therefore, the assertion of the author seems too absurd on the basis of this fundamental truth.

In conclusion, based on the arguments offered above, the professor clearly identifies the defects in the reading passage and forcefully shows that explanations given by the author are utter nonsense.

In a modern society, people always face the dilemma to choose whether AAA or BBB. This problem is the much debated one in that it affects everybody in their daily lives. People may prefer one to another although some may have no opinions about it at all. Before rendering my opinion, I think it is necessary to take a glance at the arguments of both sides.

It is quite easy for average people to choose BBB because of the obvious reason that---. It can be given by a well known example that ---.

But at the mean time, although BBB has some advantages, it also has many drawbacks such as ---. Therefore we have no complete evidence to suggest that BBB is always better than AAA. What is more, the innate quality of AAA, unfortunately, is often underestimated; in other words,if you notice the invisible benefits of choosing AAA, you can understand AAA more deeply.

Here I would explain a few of the most important reasons. The main reason is that ---. To illustrate this, there is an appropriate example that is very persuasive: ---.

--- is only part of the important aspects, and another equally significant role of choosing AAA lies in the development of ---.

This demonstrates the undeniable fact that ---.

Besides, the further reason why I advocate AAA is that ---. This may explain why ---.

In addition, some experts maintain that ----. This significant point, however, is often not noticed by most people and accordingly, is unconsciously overlooked.

Finally, as a proverb says, “Everything has two sides”. Although I admit that there are a couple of advantages of ----, I still think that the disadvantages of it are more obvious. Such as ---, ----, and ----. This demonstrates that we have no complete evidence to suggest that BBB is always better than AAA.

If all the factors above are considered, we will find out that the advantages of AAA outweigh those of BBB. Therefore from what we have discussed, we may safely come to the conclusion that choosing AAA is a rather wise decision. But I have not denied the opinion that choosing BBB. I must admit that people can do well without AAA, but no one can ignore the added convenience and satisfaction offered by AAA. Such experience will definitely be helpful in one’s later life.
