It is illustrated by this line chart how the percentage of the population that are seniors(65 and above) in three countries has changed since 1940, and will likely change to 2040.

In spite of the low value of Japan before 1988, it has increased since then. Also, this increasing trend is projected to be kept until 2040 when its figure will peak at 27%. The period between 2030 and 2034 will witness the most drastic growth of Japan.

Starting from 7% in 1940 and ending up at 25% in 2040, the value of Sweden increases constantly through the whole period, despite two declines, one of which happened from 1980 to 1995 and the other is expected to emerge from 2018 to 2028.

The percentage of the USA goes up moderately dunng the whole period. It only experienced a short-time declining trend from 1980 to 2000, followed by a plateau at around 14% between 2000 and 2020.

All in all, in 1940 the hgure of the USA ranked the first place, followed by that of Sweden and Japan. Howeve in 2040 the figure of Japan will play the most dominant role, and meanwhile that of USA is expected to amount to the smallest number.
