The subject Id like to describe is English, which has always been an important subject in Chinese education systems. Students in China start their English study in grade 3 and they will be exposed to simple grammar and vocabulary, just some fundamentals. But when they enter secondary school, English gets more difficult and complex, and students have to memorize lots of grammar rules, English new words and take numerous tests.

To be honest with you, I wasnt a big fan of learning English at first because it wasnt fun and all we did for every lesson was studying theories and drilling. So needless to say, English had become a nightmare for me. It wasnt until the 11th grade that I began to change my attitude to this subject. The reason was I had a new English teacher. Instead of putting us through all the boring stuff, he gave us a lot of opportunities to use English in a communicative way. I mean we had group discussions, presentations and were introduced to western culture. All of a sudden, English was fun!

Ironically, at the beginning, I worked very hard at it. I remember I had tons of homework to do and there were too many things to be memorized. And the result? Not satisfactory! But later, things changed, and I was having fun and motivated. Maybe, I had put in a lot of effort for my English study, but I wasnt aware of it at all! You might be wondering how my English tests were? Well, I aced most of them!

What I liked most about this subject was English study isnt just the learning of grammar rules and memorization of words and phrases, but the process of acquiring it and using it in a meaningful way. And I also got to learn English culture, and by comparing it to my own culture, I really had my mind opened.
