Id like to talk about the plastic bag bans in China.
On Janurary 19 th, 2020, China unveiled a major plan to reduce single-use plastics across the country. Non-degradable bags have been banned in major cities by the end of 2020 and will be banned in all cities and towns by 2022. The restaurant industry has been banned from using single-use straws by the end of 2020.
I first learned about this regulation soon after it was released. It was introduced and explained on TV news as well as widely discussed on social media. Actually, this is isnt Chinas first campaign against the use of plastics. In 2008, the government banned retailers from giving out free plastic bags, and banned the production of ultra-thin plastic bags. So citizens have been aware of the policy for years.
I think plastic bag bans are beneficial for our environment. Plastic bags are not biodegradable and hard to recycle. when they become litter, they pollute rivers, farmlands, cities, and oceans. It is reported that marine animals often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish or plankton, leading them to consume the litter and become ill or die, which will result in the damage of teh ecological balance in the long run. Therefore, the implementation of bans on plastics is vital to environmental protection and humans future.
Personally, I support plastic bag bans, but Im afraid that greater efforts should be made to solve problems aroused. For example, the bans would lead to the shrinking and layoffs in the plastic bag manufacturing industry and negatively affect local economy. So, the government should subsidize factories to encourage them to adopt advanced technologies that are used to produce eco-friendly bags.
