Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country.

Individuals have been for years arguing how to judge a country's progress – by economic growth or by other elements. Personally speaking, while it is true that boosting the economy is of great importance, I firmly believe that we cannot ignore the progress in other aspects.

Economic advance does play an important part for a country. Firstly, economic growth means that the job market will be able to provide the general public with more employment opportunities. As a matter of experience, the rise of employment rate can lead to a decline in the social crime rate. Secondly, the development of economy brings millions of dollars in revenue for a country by the money paid by citizens. Therefore, governments are able to allocate more public funds for the construction of basic facilities and poverty relief. All of these represent great progress a country has made.

However, some may argue that regarding economic growth as the most important goal seems somewhat short-sighted. Progress in some other fields should be taken into consideration. Take basic education for example. Constant progress of a country relies on well-educated citizens. Some people might become millionaires overnight so that certain people would have a misconception that there is no need to receive education. However, without proper education, a person wouldn't know what to do to start with. Besides, creating a fair and unbiased society is essential for a country, especially at a time when the equal rights movement is developing at a surprising speed worldwide. The most evident progress lies in the fact that gender discrimination has been being eliminated in many areas.

My view is that the progress of a country is not confined to its economic growth. I am convinced that people of today yearn for living and working in a country where they can receive proper education and men and women can be treated equally.

多年来，个人一直在争论如何判断一个国家的进步；通过经济增长或其他因素。就我个人而言，虽然提振经济确实非常重要，但我坚信，我们不能忽视其他方面的进展。
