The table reveals the how the modes of transpotation in England changed from 1985 to 2000. The unit of measurement is defined as the average miles travelled per person per year. In general, the modes can be catalogued into two types in term of whether the number of miles rose or fell; smoe modes enjoyed rising popularity while the other decreased.

The travel modes that gained popularity over the 15-year-period included car, long distance buses, train, taxi and other undefined modes. Cars miantained their position as the dominant mode of travel, with their average miles travelled by two modes almost tripled.

Travel by walking, bicycles and local buses came amiss in 15 years. Average travelling distance by local buses experienced the most pronounced decline, falling from 429 miles to 274 miles, even as the number of miles by walking and biking fell slightly from 255miles to 237 miles and from 51 miles to 41 miles, respectively.

Meanwhile, the total miles travelled rose from 4740 miles to 6,475 miles. More specifically, the more-popular ways of travelling increased faster than the less-popular ones.
