The term"medium"has various meanings. The original idea is an intervening substance，as air，through

which a force acts or an effect is produced. Through the decades，people have pondered on one question：what is the most advanced and effective medium for spreading ideas? Basically，it can be separated into two main categories：the modern and the traditional. Personally，a book，the most popular and"old-fashioned medium，is the root from which all modern forms of media are produced.

When thinking of the media，comics，radio and TV programs，and film will generally spring to mind. Admittedly，these kinds of new fancy forms do have their utility，to some extends. Compared with print media，they are more visually stimulating，may have more entertainment value，and may be more efficient. Abook can realistically contain only so much information.

Having defined"medium"as simply a means of conveying information，the only real difference between modern and traditional forms is the way that people use them，rather than the information they convey. But learning consists of two separate components：obtaining the information and understanding it. What modern media tends to do is merely to entertain us，and even then，only briefly. Besides，a huge amount of information available through modern media is not all that useful for the real world. Often，before using that information，people should be clear on what they are looking for. Books are better for people looking for something specific. Besides supplying informantion, books offer the most traditional and classic way to learn information and improve oneself. Even better, through reading, peopel can also connect to the physical pages of the book.

To sum up, reading books, even holding a book in your hands, enable you to experience the fantastic sensation of traditional and valuable culture that has existed for countless years. As Francis Bacon once said, "books are the ladders of progress for mankind."
